# How to read a Minnesota contractor record

> License kinds, the “Issued” status, bonds and registrations, and how businesses are grouped.

## How to read these records

### Issued

The DLI's own rule: a current, active license or registration has the status “Issued”. Everything else —
expired, voluntary termination, revoked, suspended — is listed under “other records on file”, with the DLI's word.

### License kinds

Residential building contractor, remodeler and roofer licenses; electrical contractor licenses; plumbing
contractor licenses; the mechanical contractor bond; pipelaying and sign contractor bonds; high pressure piping and
elevator contractors. “Registered electrical employer” and “registered plumbing employer” are businesses that employ
registered workers in those trades.

A “certificate of exemption” is not a license: it records that a business is exempt from the residential
contractor license. The DLI's own page explains the conditions.

### One record per business

The DLI files have no business number. Licenses are grouped when the business name and ZIP code are the same; a
business with two addresses appears twice.

### What is not here

Individual licensees, phone numbers, e-mail addresses, and the DLI's enforcement indicator — a yes/no flag with
no date or subject, which this site does not repeat. Check enforcement actions on the DLI's own lookup.

**Do you run a contracting company with 20 or more people on site?**

AI labs pay businesses to record first-person video of everyday hands-on work — filmed by their own staff with a
smartphone on a wearable mount, with consent and under contract.
